In late May each year, Humpback whales start to pass along the Sydney coastline on their way north to their breeding grounds. They generally wont stay long as they are in fact migrating, and usually travel at between 2 and 5 knots. Generally speaking, the whales will be heading north from May to early August, and then south from late August to December. The mothers will often have a calf on their southern journey and occasionally come into one of the Sydney harbours for a rest. Because they tend to come in very close to shore, the likelihood of a sighting is extremely high. They often tend to breach – sometimes completely out of the water, and can travel solo or in small pods.
